Think Local First DC Strengthens Area Workforce

Think Local First DC (Washington, DC) is partnering with DC’s Department of Human Services (DHS) to match residents seeking jobs with locally owned businesses seeking employees in a program they’re calling Workforce for All.

The DHS recruits, screens, and matches eligible participants with job opportunities identified by Think Local First DC, which also is providing job readiness training, job coaching, and benefits such as child care and transportation subsidies to helppeople secure and succeed in the positions.  Businesses get pointers on maximizing the program’s potential, new-hire retention, and applying for tax credits, and more, as well as the opportunity to be featured in program advertising and earned media.

Debts as small as $10,000 (the average borrower graduates owing three times as much) reduced the chance of someone starting a new business by 7 percent and lowered revenue by 42 percent.

Although the US Small Business Administration uses a liberal definition of “small business (up to 499 employees),” a new SBA report shows, even under that broad definition, small business’ share of Gross Domestic Product has been falling, dropping from 48.0 percent in 1998 to to 43.5 percent in 2014. GDP is the total market value of the goods and services produced by labor and property within the U.S.

To be clear, both of the dominant U.S. political parties have been criminally negligent when it comes to enforcement of antitrust law. But the FTC’s preliminary approval of a merger involving Staples is akin to police standing by silently as a murder occurs.

The office supply chain Staples, already a subsidiary of venture capital firm Sycamore, seeks to acquire Essendant, one of just two office supply wholesalers on which the nation’s independent office retailers depend. This would give Staples vast knowledge of its competitors and power to manipulate prices.
